You can pick one up with a price tag of PS100,000 or more (if you want the V8 Carpathian Edition, which adds air suspension and a massive boot), but if you want to go cheap there are plenty of mid-trim Wrangler-rivaling SUVs that won’t let you down on both counts.

Those high-trim Wranglers start at PS60,000 or so, but they can’t compete with the Defender in terms of off-road capability, nor do they have that same ‘feel’. Those luxury SUVs are better in town, too, even if they won’t be able to tackle anything that the Defender can.

It’s an acquired taste though – and it won’t suit everyone. But it’s still a fantastic drive, if you can find one in good condition. It’s also a very good value SUV, if you can live with the handling and gas hogging.
